| Adloun
The name of this town comes from a Phoenician word meaning “the feast of the gods.” The town contains a number of grottos, where the remains of a human from the Stone Age was found, in addition to the Sanctuary of the Prophet Sari. The village of Adloun was known in ancient times as Ornithopolis, or “City of the Birds.” An important Phoenician necropolis was discovered here with many anthropoid sarcophagi. The area around Adloun, was the scene of the first major action fought by the 2/27th Battalion during the Second World War. In order to block the Australian advance north along the coast road towards Sidon, the Vichy French had occupied positions astride the road south west of Adloun, and along the cliffs that overlooked it, immediately west of Adloun.
