| Maghdoucheh
The shrine of Our Lady of Maghdouche is situated on a hill overlooking the sea. We know that Mary, mother of Jesus, followed her son on his journeys between Cana, Tyre, Sarafand and Sidon. Popular Christian tradition in Lebanon says that when Jesus came to Sidon, the Virgin Mary stopped to wait for him on this hill and spent the night inside the cave named “Mantara.” (From the Arabic “Natara” which means “wait”). The cave was made into a sanctuary by early Christians. The cave was accidentally rediscovered by a shepherd in 1720’s, and since then the site has become a place of pilgrimage for Lebanese Christians. In the 1960’s, a hexagonal chapel, tower, and statue of Mary and Jesus were added to the site. Festivities take place in the village each year on the 8th of September.
