Sidon
It received its name from the "first-born" of Canaan, the grandson of Noah. It was the first home of the Phoenicians on the coast of Canaan, and from its extensive commercial relations became a "great" city. Sidon, the Capital of south Lebanon is located on the coast at 45 km south of Beirut. Sidon is a busy commercial center with a pleasant, conservative atmosphere of a small town. It was mentioned in the famous “El Amarina” letters of the 14 th centuries B.C.. Sidon has known many conflicts in the course of its 6000 year history.

Like other Phoenician cities, Sidon submitted to the domination of Persia, as well as of Greece and Rome before the Arab conquests. These were followed by the Crusaders and than the Mamlouks. Today, Sidon’s main street is busy with small shops and commerce. A quaint city, visitors enjoy touring the souk (vaulted marketplace), khan (caravanserail), castle, and other historical sites. The city is known for its production of engraved wooden boxes and furniture, copper and brass trays, olive oil soap, ebony and bone-handled cutlery.
