Saint Peter was the most prominent of the 12 disciples of Jesus, often serving as their spokesman and consistently named first in lists of the Twelve. Jesus foretold that Peter would deny him three times on the night of Jesus' arrest and, when the prophecy was fulfilled, Peter suffered a great deal of guilt. Our Lord promised to St. Peter the following, (chap. xvi. 18.) "Upon this rock will I build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. I will give unto thee the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven: Whatever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven; whatever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven." -- Gospel of St Matthew 16:17-19.
